Civics Service Learning Project
The Florida Civics course has a standard for students to complete a Service Learning Project. This project is OPTIONAL. You have the choice to complete this assignment as it is assigned in the course (read through the Service Learning unit & submit the worksheets) or to volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank. The objective of this project is to explain why service is valuable to a community, identify the steps of conducting a service project, conduct a service project to further the public good, and reflect on and celebrate the service experience.
If you choose to complete this project...
Once you have read through the Service Learning Unit, you must decide if you plan to complete the project as it is assigned in the course - completing the "Investigate" and "Plan" worksheets and posting a description of your issue and your service project plan in the discussion area for Part A and completing the "Reflect" worksheet, a presentation, and posting a paragraph summary of your reflection in the discussion area for Part B
OR
You may register and volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank, then complete an assignment to be submitted in Part A & Part B (this can be done in one segment) - this option is easiest!
If you are part of a team, group, or organization that regularly participates in community service (Boy Scouts, for example) and have an upcoming event, please contact me directly to discuss & receive your assignment directions.

Service Tips
If completing the project as assigned in the course, you must:
-complete the worksheets
-do your research & contact organizations
-choose an event or volunteer opportunity
-show verification of your service for Part B. This means pictures of you in action!
Examples of what students have done:
Volunteer at Give Kids the World
Environmental Clean-up
Volunteer at Ronald McDonald House
Food collection/donation
Church volunteer work
Please note: You cannot just create a presentation explaining that you cleaned your neighborhood by picking up trash, for example, for full credit. This service is acceptable, however you need to show communication with your neighborhood HOA and/or that you formed a group of neighbors together on a certain day/time for this event. Someone can take pictures for you to include in your presentation.
